Peter Nygard Sentenced to 11 Years for Sexual Assault Convictions
Former Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard has been sentenced to 11 years in prison following his conviction for four counts of sexual assault. The sentencing comes after a lengthy legal process, which culminated in his November 2023 conviction. Nygard, once a prominent figure in the fashion world, used his wealth and power to exploit vulnerable women. The assaults took place at his Toronto office from the 1980s through the early 2000s, where he lured victims under various pretexts, only to attack them in his private bedroom suite.

During the trial, five women testified, with four of them detailing how they were assaulted by Nygard in their 20s, while one victim was only 16 when the assault occurred. These disturbing testimonies described a pattern of predatory behavior that spanned years. Justice Robert Goldstein, who presided over the case, referred to Nygard as a "sexual predator" during sentencing and condemned his abuse of wealth and influence. While Nygard was convicted of four counts, he was acquitted of one charge of sexual assault and another of forcible confinement.
Despite the severity of the crimes, Nygard’s sentence was reduced due to time already served since his 2020 arrest. This means that with credit for pre-sentence custody, he will serve just under seven years of the 11-year sentence. Prosecutors had initially sought a longer sentence of 15 years, while Nygard’s defense pushed for a reduced six-year term, citing his advanced age and declining health.
Nygard’s legal troubles are far from over. He still faces additional sexual assault charges in Manitoba, Quebec, and the U.S. The charges against him in those jurisdictions include sex trafficking and racketeering, although none have yet been tested in court. Despite his convictions, Nygard continues to deny all allegations against him.
