Racial Slur on Chick-fil-A Receipt Sparks Outrage in Maryland
A disturbing incident at a Chick-fil-A in La Plata, Maryland, has brought issues of racism to the forefront after a Charles County man received a meal label with a racial slur instead of his name. On August 23, Marquise Vanzego, a Black resident, ordered food through the drive-thru at the popular fast-food chain. What he encountered next was both shocking and disheartening.
Upon receiving his order, Vanzego was stunned to see the label read "monkeys" rather than his name. He immediately felt a deep sense of hurt and humiliation, as he described the experience as “devastating.” For Vanzego, the incident wasn’t just a one-time occurrence but a painful reminder of the racial prejudice that he and many others face. “It just set me back years,” he said, reflecting on the emotional impact of the slur.

After the shocking discovery, Vanzego approached a manager inside the restaurant to file a complaint. Both the manager and the store owner offered apologies, but the situation did not end there. The store owner, identified as John Flatley, revealed that the employee responsible for the label was a minor and would not be terminated. Instead, Flatley explained that the employee had misheard Vanzego’s name due to the absence of a working intercom system; Vanzego had placed his order directly with the employee who was outside.
Vanzego was not satisfied with this resolution. He argued that the employee should face consequences for their actions, despite their age, as this incident highlighted broader issues of racism that need addressing. “I think it could’ve been handled a lot differently,” Vanzego remarked. “The employee should’ve been terminated on the spot. It’s unfortunate that he might end up losing his job, but that happens. He needs to learn from this.”
The Chick-fil-A franchise responded with a statement acknowledging that the experience did not meet their standards and was unacceptable, though they emphasized that the location is independently operated. The corporate office has yet to provide further details, directing inquiries to the local franchise.
Vanzego has taken legal action, hiring an attorney and considering a federal lawsuit for discrimination. He has decided not to return to this Chick-fil-A and expressed his frustration with the persistence of racism in everyday life. “Racism is still alive,” he stated, underscoring the gravity of the situation and its implications for broader societal issues.
This incident has sparked widespread attention and conversation about racial bias and the responsibilities of businesses to ensure inclusive and respectful treatment for all customers. As Vanzego continues to seek justice, the community watches closely, hoping for meaningful change and accountability.
