As the Baltimore Ravens gear up for the 2024 NFL season, the team is carrying more than just the hopes of their fans. They're carrying the memories of two beloved figures who passed away recently: Jacoby Jones and Joe D'Alessandris. In a touching tribute, the Ravens announced they would wear special helmet decals throughout the season to honor these two men who left an indelible mark on the franchise.

Jacoby Jones, a former Ravens wide receiver and kick returner, was a key figure in the team's 2012 Super Bowl run. Known for his explosive plays, Jones etched his name into Ravens history with his unforgettable 70-yard touchdown reception against the Denver Broncos in the divisional playoffs, famously dubbed the "Mile High Miracle." He followed that up with two more touchdowns in Super Bowl XLVII, including a 108-yard kickoff return that remains one of the most iconic moments in Super Bowl history. But beyond his on-field heroics, Jones was a larger-than-life personality who brought joy and energy to everyone around him. He passed away suddenly on July 14 in his hometown of New Orleans, leaving behind a legacy of excitement and enthusiasm that Ravens fans will never forget.

Joe D'Alessandris, known affectionately as "Joe D.," served as the Ravens' offensive line coach since 2017. He was a beloved figure within the organization, respected not just for his football acumen but for his kindness and the familial way he treated his players. D'Alessandris had a coaching career that spanned more than four decades, including 17 seasons in the NFL. Sadly, he passed away on August 25, just 11 days after being hospitalized with an acute illness. His loss has been deeply felt by the entire Ravens organization, especially the offensive linemen who worked closely with him. Players have dedicated their upcoming season to "Joe D.," vowing to honor his memory with their play on the field.

The decals, which will be placed on the back of each player's helmet, just above their numbers, are a small but significant way for the Ravens to keep the memories of Jones and D'Alessandris alive throughout the season. Head Coach John Harbaugh emphasized the importance of remembering the people who shape our lives, saying, "Hopefully those helmet tags of Jacoby Jones and Joe D'Alessandris help to serve as a reminder to all of us that it's about the people. It's about the people in your life that you share this time on Earth with. Treat them right, cherish them, celebrate them, love them, and remember them."

As the Ravens take the field this season, they'll be playing with the added motivation of honoring these two men who meant so much to the team and the city of Baltimore. Their contributions, both on and off the field, will continue to inspire the Ravens as they strive to make this season one to remember. The helmet decals serve as a visual reminder of the impact Jacoby Jones and Joe D'Alessandris had on the Ravens, and how their spirits will continue to guide the team moving forward.
