According to Downdetector, a service that monitors online outages, the volume of user complaints surged dramatically, surpassing 9,000 by 11 AM and climbing to over 15,000 by 11:35 AM. Many users attempting to use Spotify's desktop app encountered a frustrating error message reading, “Something went wrong,” rendering their efforts to stream songs and albums futile.

Not just confined to desktop users, the service's smartphone applications were also plagued with issues, as countless users found them unresponsive. Reports indicated that the problems were widespread across the United States, with some users in Canada and even other countries experiencing similar access issues. This latest outage has raised eyebrows and concerns among Spotify's extensive user base, which as of late June boasted 626 million active monthly users, including 246 million paying subscribers.

Interestingly, despite the overwhelming evidence from users, Spotify's official customer service channels on X (formerly Twitter) did not initially acknowledge the situation. In response to various user complaints about the service's downtime, the Spotify Cares account suggested potential troubleshooting steps. They advised users to try reinstalling the app, logging out, restarting their devices, and then logging back in. While these recommendations may help resolve individual problems, they did little to address the widespread nature of the outage.

This is not the first time Spotify has faced such technical difficulties. The streaming giant has a history of intermittent outages, including a notable incident in March 2022 when users struggled to log in, erroneously being told their usernames and passwords were incorrect. That issue was resolved within about an hour and a half, but each outage leaves users frustrated and longing for the reliable streaming service they’ve come to expect.

With Spotify's user base continually growing, such outages can be particularly concerning. The platform recently reported impressive financial gains, showcasing a record net profit of €274 million on revenues of €3.81 billion, up 20% from the previous year.
