Stormy Weather Ahead for Boston: Wind, Rain, and Rough Seas in the Forecast

Boston is in for a significant weather change over the next few days as a storm system is set to move in, bringing strong winds, rain, and choppy seas. After an extended dry spell, we’re about to see some dramatic shifts that will usher in a true fall atmosphere. As early as late Wednesday night, clouds will thicken, and rain is expected to arrive just after midnight, carrying into Thursday and Friday.

For Thursday, the heaviest rainfall is expected to affect areas south of the Massachusetts Turnpike, with Buzzards Bay, Cape Cod, and the islands likely seeing 1 to 2 inches of rain. Meanwhile, gusty winds from the northeast will ramp up, reaching up to 40 mph along the coast. These conditions are expected to linger into Friday, making for a blustery, rain-soaked end to the workweek. The storm system is slow-moving, and the weekend isn’t looking much brighter. Saturday could still bring drizzle, cloud cover, and cool temperatures, with highs only in the mid-60s.

In addition to the rain and wind, marine conditions are expected to worsen. Wave heights offshore will rise between 5 to 8 feet, posing a risk of beach erosion and dangerous rip currents, particularly from Friday through Sunday. Beachgoers should exercise caution, as lifeguard services have mostly ended for the season.

As the storm clears out by Sunday, cooler air will settle in, with high temperatures lingering in the 60s throughout the weekend. The timing of this weather shift coincides perfectly with the start of fall, marked by the Autumnal Equinox on Sunday at 8:43 a.m. This event signifies when the sun’s most direct rays cross the equator, signaling the official beginning of fall. With temperatures expected to remain on the cooler side well into next week, it seems like autumn will arrive right on schedule.

For those in and around Boston, it’s a good time to prepare for the blustery and wet conditions ahead. This week marks a major shift away from the dry and warm pattern we’ve been experiencing, ushering in fall-like weather that looks set to stay. Stay safe and keep an eye on the latest forecasts, as this storm system develops.
