Texas Longhorns Lead Mississippi State Despite First-Half Struggles in SEC Opener
The Texas Longhorns began their SEC era with a matchup against Mississippi State, and while they lead 14-6 at halftime, the game has been anything but smooth. With starting quarterback Quinn Ewers sidelined for a second straight game, Arch Manning took the helm, showing flashes of brilliance alongside some hiccups in the first half.
Manning completed 15 of 19 passes for 202 yards and a touchdown by halftime, demonstrating his ability to move the offense effectively. Early in the game, he orchestrated a quick opening drive, capping it off with a one-yard touchdown by Jaydon Blue. However, Mississippi State’s strategy of dominating possession—holding the ball for over 20 minutes in the first half—kept Manning and the Texas offense off the field for long stretches.

Mississippi State relied heavily on its running game and backup quarterback Chris Parson to control the clock, but they struggled to capitalize on their opportunities. They managed just two field goals, despite starting one drive deep in Texas territory following a fumble by Blue.
The Longhorns, on the other hand, had their own issues with mistakes. Besides Blue’s fumble, a holding penalty and a dropped deep pass from Johntay Cook II prevented Texas from pulling away. Yet, as the first half neared its close, Manning delivered a 49-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Moore Jr., giving the Longhorns some breathing room heading into the locker room.
While the Longhorns lead, the game has been tighter than expected due to some costly miscues and Mississippi State’s ball-control strategy. With the second half looming, Texas will look to clean up their execution and expand their lead, while Mississippi State will aim to keep the game close by continuing to chew up the clock.
The Longhorns receive the ball to start the second half, and all eyes are on Manning to see if he can continue his solid performance in Texas' SEC debut.
