Thailand Zoo's Baby Hippo Sensation: Moo Deng Sparks Concern Amidst Fame
In the vibrant heart of Thailand, a tiny celebrity has captured the world's attention—Moo Deng, a baby pygmy hippopotamus. This little hippo, only two months old, has become a dazzling internet star and a beloved icon for many. Born in July at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi, Moo Deng has quickly made a name for herself with her charming antics and endearing appearance. Her rise to fame, however, has prompted significant concerns for her safety and well-being.
Moo Deng’s adorable toothless chewing and playful nature have made her a sensation on social media. Videos showcasing her daily activities—like napping, waddling around her enclosure, and nibbling on vegetables—have garnered millions of views. One clip of her caretaker playing with her on TikTok has achieved over 33 million views, with fans from around the globe showering her with affection through countless fan pages and memes. Her cuteness has even inspired a series of Moo Deng-themed cakes and cosmetic ads featuring her signature “pink & peachy” cheeks.

Despite the overwhelming affection from fans, the zoo's caretakers are increasingly concerned about the impact of this fame on Moo Deng's health and safety. Visitors have been so eager to see the baby hippo that some have behaved irresponsibly, throwing objects and water at her, which is not only disruptive but dangerous. In response, the zoo has imposed new restrictions to safeguard Moo Deng. Visiting hours have been limited to just Saturdays and Sundays, with each viewing session restricted to five minutes.
Zoo director Narongwit Chodchoi has voiced strong concerns about these behaviors, emphasizing the need to protect the young hippo and maintain a comfortable environment for her. "These behaviors are not only cruel but also dangerous," Chodchoi stated. “We must ensure that Moo Deng’s surroundings are safe and secure.”
The pygmy hippo, a species classified as endangered, faces threats from habitat loss and poaching, with only about 2,000 individuals remaining in the wild. As Moo Deng continues to captivate hearts worldwide, her caretakers hope that increased awareness about her species will foster greater respect and protection for these rare creatures.
