Tornado Warnings Hit Southern Manitoba Amid Stormy Weather
Southern Manitoba experienced an intense bout of severe weather on Monday, as tornado warnings were issued for various areas, including Steinbach, Niverville, and Grunthal. The warnings, issued by Environment Canada, came in response to a moisture-laden air mass moving in from the United States, sparking thunderstorms that covered the region throughout the day. For many, it was a stark reminder of how quickly the weather can escalate into something potentially life-threatening.
Around 4 p.m., the tornado warning was broadcast, alerting residents to take immediate precautions. Environment Canada stressed that this was a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation, advising everyone to take cover if severe weather approached their area. Shortly after the warning was issued, the skies over Steinbach darkened dramatically, followed by a torrent of rain, hail, and strong winds. The heavy downpour resulted in flooded streets across the city, while gusts of wind added to the chaos under a very ominous, dark sky.

By 4:30 p.m., the storm over Steinbach had passed, and the tornado warning for the area was lifted. However, the alert was then extended to Richer and the Rural Municipality of Ste. Anne as the storm continued to move eastward. Despite the brief reprieve, more rain was expected, with meteorologists noting that Steinbach had already received 38 millimeters of rain as of 4:30 p.m.—the most significant rainfall the area had seen in over a month.
For Steinbach residents, the weather event marked a sudden and intense shift, with the city seeing its heaviest rainfall since August 15, when 40 millimeters of rain fell. Despite the severity of Monday’s storm, forecasts suggested that the weather would calm overnight, with thunderstorms expected to taper off by morning. By Tuesday, a hot and humid day was predicted, offering some relief after the stormy conditions.
While tornadoes are always a concern during severe thunderstorms, the warning served as a reminder of how prepared the community must remain. For those living in the areas affected, Monday’s event was a vivid example of the unpredictability and power of nature.
