Tragedy Strikes: 31 Lives Lost in Iranian Coal Mine Explosion
In a devastating incident on Saturday night, a methane gas explosion at a coal mine in Iran's South Khorasan province has claimed the lives of at least 31 miners and left many others injured. The blast occurred around 9 PM local time at a facility owned by the Madanjoo company, a significant player in the region, which supplies around 76% of the country's coal. According to Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, the tragedy not only resulted in fatalities but also left 16 individuals injured, with 17 miners still unaccounted for as rescue operations continue.
Initially, local reports suggested the death toll could be as high as 51, highlighting the severity of the explosion and the urgency of the situation. Rescuers are working tirelessly, currently 400 meters away from the location where they believe the missing miners are trapped. The recovery efforts face challenges due to rubble and dangerous gas levels, but teams are determined to reach those still inside the mine by Monday.
