Tragic Drowning in Carleton-sur-Mer Sparks Ongoing Debate on Safety Measures
The recent drowning of a 50-year-old man at Carleton-sur-Mer has raised serious concerns about safety in the popular fishing area near the barachois. The victim, a fisherman from Laval, lost his life after being swept away by the strong currents while fishing in shallow water near the municipal campground. This incident marks the fourth fatal accident in this location within the last decade, making it a highly debated topic among local authorities and residents.
The fishing spot is known for its picturesque views and the presence of striped bass, which attract numerous amateur anglers each year. However, it is also a notoriously dangerous area, with strong currents that become perilous, especially during tide changes. Mayor Mathieu Lapointe has been vocal about the risks associated with the site, explaining that while the waters may seem calm at first glance, the unpredictable currents are not immediately obvious to those unfamiliar with the area. In 2022, the town took action by installing new signage warning of the dangers. These signs were placed after consultations with the Lifesaving Society and local sports and leisure organizations, who recommended better ways to inform visitors. Despite these efforts, accidents continue to occur. The town is now considering additional measures, such as the installation of lifebuoys. However, as Lapointe mentions, there is concern that providing such safety equipment might give people a false sense of security, potentially encouraging more risky behavior rather than deterring it.
Local fisherman François Landry, who has been fishing in the area for over 15 years, emphasizes the importance of personal responsibility when venturing into the waters. He warns that many anglers, particularly tourists, underestimate the danger, often venturing out without proper equipment or life vests. The sudden drop in depth—from just a few centimeters to over 10 meters—can catch even experienced fishers off guard. Landry himself has witnessed and intervened in dangerous situations, saving a fellow fisherman from drowning a few years ago.
The mayor and local officials continue to stress the importance of awareness and caution, especially for visitors unfamiliar with the area’s risks. While preventative measures like warning signs and public awareness campaigns are in place, many believe that more needs to be done. Suggestions include the formation of a dedicated safety committee to address ongoing concerns and implement further solutions.
