The Nolichucky River is particularly concerning for local officials. Erwin explains that rain falling in North Carolina can lead to surges in the river levels in Unicoi County. "When it rains heavily in North Carolina, we see the effects here within two to three hours," he notes. This quick response time adds urgency to their preparations, as rising water levels can pose serious threats to safety and infrastructure.

"If you encounter water on the road, it's best not to drive through it," he cautions, highlighting the dangers of nightfall during storms when visibility is compromised.
The Heurich family, currently hiking the Appalachian Trail, experienced the unexpected impact of the flooding firsthand. Having set up camp in the Cherokee National Forest, they were abruptly told to evacuate due to rising water levels. "We had to leave the campground because it was closed," Shiloh Heurich explains. The family has since relocated to an Airbnb nearby, providing them a vantage point of the swelling river. "We could see trees and logs floating by; it's quite a sight," adds Melanie Heurich, reflecting on the river's dramatic transformation.
As the next 72 hours unfold, Erwin and his team will remain vigilant, closely monitoring the situation and ready to respond as needed. The community's safety is their top priority, and they are prepared to take action should the river rise dangerously high.
