Urgent Water Main Repairs Impacting Calgary's Water Usage

Calgary residents, we're currently facing a critical situation with our city-wide water supply due to essential water main repairs. As of September 11th, 2024, the city is actively engaged in significant repair work on our water infrastructure, which is impacting water usage across Calgary.

Here’s a quick update on the situation: Yesterday’s water consumption hit 481 million liters, a level that is sustainable for our Glenmore Water Treatment Plant, allowing us to operate without overstraining the system. This is a testament to the collective efforts of Calgarians, local businesses, and regional neighbors who have been diligently working to conserve water. Your efforts are truly making a difference, especially given the current circumstances.

We’ve seen an impressive display of community spirit lately, with neighbors sharing valuable water-saving tips and businesses making substantial cuts to their water usage. The landscaping industry deserves a special mention for its significant sacrifices to support this crucial repair work.

Now, let’s dive into the progress of our construction efforts. We’ve made substantial headway with the repairs. At Sites 1 to 4 along 33 Avenue N.W. and Shouldice Park, all twelve pipe repairs are complete. We’re now wrapping up backfilling and paving, with portions of the road set to be reopened shortly. The next steps involve finishing up concrete work on curbs, gutters, and sidewalks, as well as restoring any impacted driveways and landscaping. Paving at Sites 2 and 3 is expected to be completed today, weather permitting.

At Shouldice Park, most of the repair work is complete, and we are beginning to remove construction equipment and fencing. The remaining excavation at Site 5 on 33 Avenue N.W. and 86 Street N.W. is in progress, with backfilling finished for one segment and concrete pouring scheduled for later this week.

Furthermore, at Sites 6 to 8 along 16 Avenue N.W., excavation and concrete pouring are complete, and we’re now focusing on concrete form removal and backfilling. We’re pleased to report that much of the remaining work is ahead of schedule, though upcoming rainy weather may affect our construction timeline. We will provide updated schedules and more details on completing the repairs and restoring normal water service in the coming days.

For those interested in the inner workings of our water treatment facilities, we have video footage available of the Glenmore Water Treatment Plant. Calgary operates two main water treatment plants: Glenmore, which has served the city since 1933, and Bearspaw, added in 1972 to accommodate growth. Currently, with the Bearspaw South Feeder Main out of service, we’re relying heavily on the Glenmore Plant, which is running at full capacity. This situation puts significant pressure on the Glenmore Plant and its dedicated crew, who are working tirelessly to maintain a steady water supply.

To manage the increased demand, we need to keep daily water usage at or below 485 million liters to allow for essential maintenance and avoid potential failures. With rain in the forecast, it’s an opportune moment to refill rain barrels and containers. Please continue to reduce your water usage, as every little bit helps us manage the demand and complete these crucial repairs.

Thank you for your ongoing support and cooperation. For the latest updates, water-saving tips, and to sign up for email notifications about the construction progress, visit calgary.ca/savewater. Together, we’re making great strides towards securing a reliable water system for our city.
