"Veteran Dreamworld Tiger Handler Melissa Reynolds Recovering After Being Mauled by Tiger"
In a shocking and rare incident at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast, veteran tiger handler Melissa Reynolds was mauled by a tiger just an hour before the park opened to visitors. Reynolds, who has dedicated more than 12 years of her life to working with these majestic animals, was conducting her routine duties when the unexpected attack occurred.
The 47-year-old handler was walking alongside a 180kg tiger with another trainer when the big cat suddenly turned on her, biting and scratching her arm and shoulder. The attack resulted in severe injuries, including deep lacerations and puncture wounds. Melissa was immediately rushed to the hospital, where she remains in stable condition.

Reynolds is well-known in the Dreamworld community, having been featured in various local publications and even making an appearance on Channel 9’s Today Show back in 2012. During her appearance, she expressed her love for the job, describing it as “amazing” and relishing the opportunity to spend time, feed, and play with the tigers.
The swift response from the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) and the first aid providers at Dreamworld was crucial in stabilizing Reynolds. Justin Payne, the acting district director of QAS, praised the initial care Reynolds received, which significantly minimized the risk of infection and further complications. Payne also noted that Reynolds’ extensive training likely played a role in her ability to endure the attack and stay calm under such distressing circumstances.
Dreamworld, home to several tigers, including the five-year-olds Khan, Javi, and Zakari, has expressed its commitment to supporting Melissa Reynolds during her recovery. The park’s management described the incident as “isolated and rare,” and they are conducting a thorough review to understand how such an unexpected event occurred. They reassured the public that safety remains their top priority.
This incident has reignited discussions about the risks involved in close interactions with wild animals, even in controlled environments. While Dreamworld and similar institutions are held to high standards for animal care and husbandry, this event is a sobering reminder of the inherent dangers that come with working alongside wild animals.
As Reynolds continues her recovery, the focus remains on ensuring her well-being and conducting a comprehensive review to prevent such incidents in the future. Dreamworld’s swift and professional response underscores their commitment to safety and the welfare of both their staff and the animals in their care.
