Widespread Internet and Cell Service Outages Hit Savannah and Surrounding Areas
Recently, residents of Savannah and parts of Coastal Georgia and South Carolina faced significant disruptions in their internet and cell service, affecting thousands of customers. This issue came to light on September 23, 2024, around 10:44 AM when Verizon acknowledged that data, voice, text, and home internet services were severely limited in the Savannah area. A spokesperson for Verizon stated that the problems were due to two fiber cuts caused by a third-party vendor.
As the network disruption unfolded, many residents found themselves cut off from essential services. City officials in Beaufort, South Carolina, reported that city facilities lost both phone and internet service. In response, they temporarily closed administrative offices, including the Police Department, which will resume operations on Tuesday morning. The situation has been particularly challenging for those relying on internet connectivity for work, communication, and access to vital information.

Verizon's engineers are currently working with the vendor to quickly resolve the disruptions and restore services. Hargray, another provider in the area, also reported that some of their customers were experiencing slow internet or outages due to the same fiber damage. Their technicians have been working tirelessly to expedite the restoration of service, with updates being posted on their Facebook page.
By Monday evening, some of the services had started to come back online, although many residents continued to experience connectivity issues well into the afternoon. The disruptions highlight the critical reliance on stable internet and mobile connectivity for daily activities, from work to emergency services.
