Abacus Data Poll Reveals Surge in Negative Impressions of Pierre Poilievre

Recent polling conducted by Abacus Data has brought to light some striking dynamics in Canadian politics, particularly concerning Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre. The survey, which took place from October 3 to 10, 2024, involved 1,900 Canadian adults and revealed that while the Conservative Party maintains a substantial lead in voter preference, Poilievre’s popularity is experiencing a notable decline. In fact, the survey shows a 5-point increase in negative impressions of Poilievre, with 40% of respondents now viewing him unfavorably, compared to 35% just a month earlier. This shift marks the first time since October 2023 that Poilievre's net favorability score has fallen into the negative, settling at -1.

What's particularly alarming for Poilievre is that this increase in negative sentiment spans multiple demographics and regions, indicating a widespread concern rather than a localized issue. His unfavorable ratings have climbed by 7 points in British Columbia, 6 points in Quebec, and also rose by 5 points among men and 4 points among women. This trend suggests that even among those who might be open to voting Conservative, there is a growing discontent with Poilievre. The data reveals that former Liberal, NDP, and Bloc Québécois supporters have also become increasingly critical of his leadership.

Despite this decline in favorability, it is important to note that Poilievre still holds a more favorable view than his competitors. For instance, only 30% of respondents view NDP leader Jagmeet Singh positively, while Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sits even lower at 23%. Poilievre’s strength lies in his overall recognition, with 39% of Canadians still holding a positive impression of him, a figure that is higher than that of Singh or Trudeau.

The landscape also shows an evolving sentiment among Canadians regarding the current government and the desire for change. According to the poll, 51% of Canadians believe it’s time for a government change, although this represents a slight decrease from last month. Simultaneously, there’s a notable rise in the number of Canadians who are unsure about suitable alternatives to the current Liberal government. As a result, while Poilievre's negatives are climbing, the support for the Conservative Party remains robust, with a 21-point lead over the Liberals.

Interestingly, despite negative perceptions, there seems to be potential for growth. A recent Conservative Party advertisement titled "Mountain" appears to resonate well with viewers, improving Poilievre's image among certain demographics. The ad was positively received by 52% of respondents, suggesting that with effective communication and outreach, Poilievre could turn some of this sentiment around.

Moreover, Canadians under the age of 45 responded particularly favorably, indicating a demographic that could be pivotal in future elections. Many respondents described Poilievre as relatable and in touch with everyday Canadian struggles, voicing hopes that he would be a force for positive change.

Overall, while the current data presents a challenging scenario for Pierre Poilievre, it also underscores the unpredictable nature of politics. As the landscape evolves, Poilievre's ability to address concerns, craft a compelling narrative, and connect with a broader audience will be essential in navigating this tumultuous political terrain. The upcoming months will be crucial as Canadians evaluate their options and consider the direction they wish for their country to take.
