AJ McKee Hints at Potential Showdown Against Usman Nurmagomedov
AJ McKee has dropped a huge hint that his much-anticipated fight with Usman Nurmagomedov could be next on the horizon. McKee, who faces Paul Hughes at the upcoming PFL: Battle of the Giants event, has been eager to square off against Nurmagomedov for over a year. Despite an injury that forced him out of the Bellator Lightweight Grand Prix, McKee now feels the fight is finally within reach.
In a recent conversation, McKee revealed that none other than Khabib Nurmagomedov himself told him about the possibility of the fight. At a recent event in San Diego, Khabib reportedly passed by McKee and said, "See you in Dubai," implying that the fight against Usman is likely to happen soon. According to McKee, this is the bout that everyone wants, and there doesn’t seem to be any other major fights on the table for either fighter right now.

McKee’s transition to lightweight has been impressive, maintaining a perfect 4-0 record in the division. His last bout was a quick finish over PFL favorite Clay Collard earlier this year. Now, he's gearing up to face Paul Hughes, a promising newcomer who is still relatively new to the PFL but already considered one of the top contenders in the division. Despite Hughes’ potential, McKee is confident in his experience and plans to show the Irish fighter that there are levels to this sport.
McKee admits that he leaves most of the fight preparation and strategy to his father and trainer, Antonio McKee. He doesn’t focus too much on his opponents ahead of time, trusting his father’s game plan. For McKee, every fighter is just another name on his hit list, and he’s determined not to be a stepping stone for anyone’s rise to stardom.
Reflecting on his early career, McKee remembers his hunger when he faced his first veteran opponent, Pat Curran. Now, even though he’s more seasoned, he says he still feels that same drive. As he prepares for this fight, McKee remains focused on coming out victorious, just as he’s done so many times before. Victory on Saturday could further solidify his path to the fight he’s been chasing – a showdown with Usman Nurmagomedov.
It’s clear that McKee is driven not only by his desire to win but also by the possibility of securing the biggest fight of his career. If all goes well this weekend, we could soon see McKee and Nurmagomedov finally facing off in what would undoubtedly be one of the most anticipated matchups in recent MMA history.
