BC Ferries Faces Cancellations Due to High Winds Affecting Sailings
In recent developments, BC Ferries has announced a series of cancellations affecting multiple routes due to severe weather conditions. On Friday, high winds in the North Strait of Georgia forced the ferry service to prioritize the safety of both passengers and crew, leading to the suspension of several sailings.
Starting early in the day, the cancellations began with routes from Powell River to Texada Island. At 9:45 a.m., BC Ferries confirmed that all sailings between Westview in Powell River and Blubber Bay on Texada Island were canceled. This included the 11:25 a.m. departure from Blubber Bay and the 12:15 p.m. departure from Westview. As the day progressed, additional cancellations were made, emphasizing the need to act decisively in light of the weather warnings issued by Environment Canada.
By noon, the impact of the weather conditions extended further, with sailings between Quadra Island and Cortes Island being called off. The 11:55 a.m. departure from Whaletown and subsequent sailings from both islands were included in this round of cancellations. In total, four sailings on this route were canceled, highlighting the widespread disruption caused by the stormy weather.

Further complicating travel plans for many, BC Ferries also canceled sailings between Campbell River and Quadra Island. As of noon, a total of twelve scheduled sailings were announced as canceled, disrupting travel between 12:40 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. This cancellation reflects the severe weather forecast for high winds affecting the area, as confirmed by BC Ferries in an official statement.
The cancellations didn’t stop there. By 12:35 p.m., routes between Port McNeill, Cormorant Island, and Malcolm Island also faced disruption. The 1:10 p.m. sailing departing Port McNeill, as well as the 1:45 p.m. and 2:20 p.m. departures from Sointula and Alert Bay, respectively, were also affected. BC Ferries communicated their awareness of the inconveniences these cancellations would cause to travelers, stating, “We know you have important places to be. We are currently monitoring the weather conditions with the goal of getting you underway as soon as it’s safe to do so.” They also emphasized the possibility of further cancellations if conditions do not improve.
Passengers planning to travel this weekend are advised to stay updated on sailing conditions, as BC Ferries is continuously monitoring the situation and ready to adjust operations as necessary. Safety remains their top priority, and if weather conditions worsen, more routes may be suspended.
BC Ferries encourages travelers to exercise caution while on board, particularly when moving around the vessel during adverse weather. They advise passengers to stay inside and listen carefully to safety instructions from the crew. If you have made a reservation for a sailing that is subsequently canceled due to weather, it's important to note that BC Ferries does not provide refunds for cancellations outside of their control. However, should a cancellation occur for reasons within their control, passengers can submit a compensation request along with their receipts.
As BC Ferries navigates this challenging weather situation, travelers are reminded to stay informed and plan accordingly, keeping safety at the forefront of their travel arrangements. For the latest updates and information on sailing conditions, customers can visit the BC Ferries website.
