Billy Zane is set to appear at the prestigious Torino Film Festival in Italy to premiere the highly anticipated independent film Waltzing With Brando . Directed by Bill Fishman, this movie dives deep into a fascinating chapter of Marlon Brando’s life, centering on a lesser-known yet captivating project: his vision of an eco-friendly retreat. Zane, known for his standout role as Cal Hockley in Titanic , takes on the challenging task of embodying Brando during a pivotal period in his career, just as Brando was preparing for roles in The Godfather and Last Tango in Paris . The film captures not only Brando’s legacy in acting but also his pursuit of environmental harmony and architecture in a beautiful yet ambitious undertaking.
Waltzing With Brando is based on a memoir by Bernard Judge, the architect behind Brando’s sustainable vision. The story reveals Brando’s recruitment of Judge, a driven Los Angeles-based architect, to create an ecologically pristine retreat on Tetiaroa, an uninhabitable island in Tahiti that Brando sought to transform. This idealistic endeavor reflects Brando’s desire to escape the chaos of fame while contributing to environmental conservation—a topic still highly relevant today. The majority of the film was shot on location in Tetiaroa, where Brando and Judge tried to bring this green vision to life, setting the stage for a compelling blend of personal ambition, friendship, and a unique vision of paradise.
The timing of this premiere couldn’t be more fitting, as Torino will celebrate Marlon Brando’s centennial with a 24-film retrospective honoring his influential career.
