Bombers Break into AFLW Top Eight with Gritty Win Over Suns
Essendon surged into the top eight of the AFLW with a hard-fought nine-point victory over Gold Coast Suns, 5.6 (36) to 4.3 (27), in a Sunday clash at People First Stadium. The match was a vital one for both teams, as the Bombers looked to extend their winning streak, while the Suns were still in search of their first win of the season.
It was a tough contest in the Queensland heat, with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees. The Bombers dominated most of the match but struggled to convert their territorial advantage into a decisive lead. Essendon generated 44 inside 50s compared to Gold Coast's 26, but their inefficiency in front of goal kept the Suns within reach for much of the game.

Maddy Prespakis was a standout for Essendon, overcoming the tagging efforts of Elise Barwick to rack up 22 disposals and two crucial goals. Her composure and class were on full display, particularly when the game was in the balance. Georgia Nanscawen also played a key role, accumulating 28 disposals and seven clearances, helping Essendon control the midfield.
Despite their dominance, the Bombers only led by 19 points at the final break, and the Suns launched a late comeback in the final quarter. Goals from Jac Dupuy and Jordan Membrey narrowed the margin to just nine points, setting up a tense finish. However, Essendon held on, with their defense holding firm to secure the win and move into seventh place on the ladder.
For the Suns, it was another frustrating loss in what has been a difficult season. Dupuy kicked two goals, while Charlie Rowbottom and Lucy Single were instrumental around the ground, combining for 15 clearances. Meara Girvan was also impressive in defense, cutting off several of Essendon’s forward entries.
Essendon’s win makes it their third in a row, giving them a real chance to solidify their finals position in the coming weeks. Their next challenge comes on Friday night against the Western Bulldogs. Meanwhile, Gold Coast will be looking to regroup before their QClash with Brisbane, hoping to finally taste victory this season.
