Cameron Diaz Reveals Why She Had to Step Away from Acting

Cameron Diaz is making headlines once again, and this time it's not just about her illustrious career in Hollywood. The actress recently announced her comeback after taking a significant break from acting. Diaz is set to star in the upcoming Netflix film "Back in Action," marking her return to the screen after more than a decade away. The last time audiences saw her was in the 2014 musical adaptation of "Annie." After that, she stepped back from the film industry to focus on her family and various business ventures.

During a recent appearance at Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit, Diaz candidly opened up about her decision to retire from acting. “For me, it was just something I had to do,” she said, reflecting on the necessity of that choice in reclaiming her life. Diaz emphasized that the opinions and successes of others didn't sway her decision; she was resolute in prioritizing her well-being and creating the life she truly desired. “Nobody’s opinion, nobody’s success, no one’s offer, no one’s anything could change my mind about my decision of taking care of myself and building the life that I really wanted to have,” she continued.

At 52, Diaz is not just returning to acting; she is also a devoted mother of two. She shares her children, Raddix, who is six, and Cardinal, who is just six months old, with her husband, Benji Madden. The couple tied the knot in 2015, around the same time Diaz stepped back from her career. She dedicated herself to her family and later ventured into the organic wine business with her brand, Avaline. Interestingly, Diaz’s close friend Gwyneth Paltrow is also poised to make her own acting comeback, having stepped away for similar reasons.

Sources close to Diaz reveal that it was Madden who encouraged her to return to acting. While she admits to feeling a bit rusty and nervous about stepping back into the spotlight, she is primarily excited about the opportunity. "She feels a bit rusty and nervous about it, but mostly excited," an insider noted. Diaz is ready to take on this new project, diving back into the world of film with enthusiasm.

In "Back in Action," Diaz reunites with Jamie Foxx, her co-star from both "Annie" and "Any Given Sunday." The comedy-action film follows CIA spies Emily (played by Diaz) and Matt (portrayed by Foxx) as they are pulled back into the world of espionage after their secret identities are compromised. The film also features notable actors like Glenn Close and Andrew Scott. Diaz expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I couldn’t say no to Jamie. He said, ‘Come with me.’ And I was like, ‘Okay, let’s do it.’” Foxx also shared his excitement about Diaz's return, calling her “an incredible force” and highlighting her significant contributions to the industry.

But that's not all for Diaz. She is also set to reprise her beloved role as Fiona in "Shrek 5," and she's reportedly filming a new comedy with Jonah Hill, alongside stars like Keanu Reeves and Matt Bomer.
