Chelsea Secure Comfortable 4-2 Win Against Gent in UEFA Conference League
Chelsea cruised to a 4-2 victory over Belgian side Gent in their UEFA Conference League opener, despite making 11 changes to their squad. The match, held at Stamford Bridge, showcased the depth and talent within Enzo Maresca’s squad. Right from the 12th minute, Chelsea took control, with Renato Veiga heading in the opener from a precise cross by Mykhailo Mudryk. This set the tone for what would be a dominant performance from the Blues.
Chelsea doubled their lead just moments into the second half. Pedro Neto capitalized on a long ball from Axel Disasi, drilling the ball into the net with a powerful near-post finish. Gent responded quickly, though, with Tsuyoshi Watanabe heading in a goal at the 50-minute mark. Although it was initially checked for offside, the goal stood, briefly sparking hope for the Belgian side.

However, Chelsea’s attacking power was too much for Gent. In the 63rd minute, Christopher Nkunku, always in the right place, pounced on a loose ball to net his seventh goal of the season. Just seven minutes later, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall made it 4-1 after Gent’s Watanabe failed to clear the danger, slotting home to restore Chelsea's three-goal cushion.
Gent managed to grab a consolation goal late on through Omri Gandelman, capitalizing on a lapse in Chelsea’s defense. Still, this did little to change the narrative of the match, which saw Chelsea dominate possession and chances throughout. Gent, whose most expensive player, Momodou Sonko, sat on the bench, struggled to match Chelsea’s quality and depth. In contrast, Chelsea, with a squad valued at over £1.1bn, looked every bit like one of the favorites to win the Conference League this season.
The performance by Chelsea’s second-string lineup highlighted their incredible squad depth. With players like Cole Palmer, Romeo Lavia, and Wesley Fofana not even selected for the match, it’s clear that Maresca has a wealth of options at his disposal. Despite their opponent’s efforts, Chelsea's dominance shone through, leaving no doubt that they are strong contenders to add another European trophy to their collection this season.
