Chicago White Sox Near Decision on New Manager, Will Venable Emerges as Frontrunner
The Chicago White Sox appear to be narrowing in on their new manager, with reports emerging that Texas Rangers associate manager Will Venable may be the one to take the reins after a historically tough season. Venable, who has built a solid reputation as a versatile and well-regarded coach, would step in following the White Sox’s record-setting 121-loss season, which left fans and team leadership eager for a strong turnaround.
Since firing former manager Pedro Grifol in August, White Sox general manager Chris Getz has led an extensive search for a manager who can connect with players and bring renewed energy to the organization. The decision, long-awaited by both players and fans, may signal a fresh start after the team struggled in nearly every area of play in 2024. In his search, Getz has emphasized looking outside the organization for a manager with “leadership qualities, player credibility, and an in-uniform connection to the game.”

Will Venable stands out as a favorite in this field of candidates, bringing with him a diverse experience from his playing days and a notable tenure with the Rangers, where he served as an associate manager. Venable’s background includes roles with several teams, including the Chicago Cubs and the Boston Red Sox, and experience under high-profile managers like Bruce Bochy and Joe Maddon. Known for his level-headed presence and positive influence on players, Venable may be exactly what the White Sox need as they look to reshape their clubhouse culture.
Chicago’s decision-making process has also reportedly included other top candidates such as Cleveland Guardians’ Craig Albernaz and former Angels manager Phil Nevin. However, Venable’s rapport with players and his recent experience with the Rangers, a team fresh from a 2023 World Series win, likely give him a unique edge.
With the World Series winding down, the White Sox are expected to make their official announcement soon, possibly during one of the breaks between games.
