Coca-Cola Recalls Over 13,000 Cans of Mislabeled Minute Maid Drinks in Three U.S. States

Coca-Cola has recently recalled over 13,000 cases of its Minute Maid Zero Sugar Lemonade due to a significant labeling error. This recall, which was conducted voluntarily, affects approximately 13,153 cases of the product, each containing 12 cans. The mislabeled drinks were shipped to retail stores across three states: Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the cans were labeled as containing the zero-sugar version of the lemonade, but instead, they contained the regular version, which has a much higher sugar content.

The difference between the two products is quite stark. While the Minute Maid Zero Sugar Lemonade contains just five calories, 2 grams of carbs, and 0 grams of sugar per can, the regular version has 150 calories, 42 grams of carbs, and a hefty 40 grams of sugar. This error could have posed a serious problem for consumers who are watching their sugar intake, whether for dietary, health, or medical reasons, such as diabetes.

In September, Coca-Cola issued the recall and reassured consumers that "no impacted product remains in the market," and all recall activities in the affected areas have been completed. Despite the voluntary recall being initiated by Coca-Cola, no formal press release was issued. Instead, the information came directly from the FDA's enforcement report, which documents such events. USA TODAY reported that attempts to contact the FDA for further comments on the situation were unsuccessful.

Consumers who may have purchased the recalled product can identify it by looking for the codes "FEB1725CNA" and "FEB1725CNB" printed on the carton and the bottom of the cans. Additionally, the phrase "CANNED UNDER THE AUTHORITY OF THE COCA-COLA COMPANY, ATLANTA, GA" is also present on the packaging, making it easier for customers to spot the affected cans.

While Coca-Cola has successfully completed the recall process in the involved states, this event serves as a reminder of how essential accurate labeling is in the food and beverage industry. Mislabeling, especially when it involves significant nutritional differences like sugar content, can lead to unintended health risks for consumers.
