Cory Mills Leads Hurricane Helene Rescue Efforts in North Carolina
In a commendable display of leadership and compassion, Florida Republican Representative Cory Mills has stepped up to assist victims affected by Hurricane Helene in North Carolina. Taking the initiative, Mills has launched a rescue mission, working alongside other dedicated volunteers to provide much-needed aid and supplies to those grappling with the aftermath of the disaster. "It makes sense that Americans come together in times of grief and strife," Mills stated during an interview, emphasizing the core values of community and unity in times of crisis. “We’re not defined by the federal government; we’re defined by ‘We the People.’”
This is not the first time Mills has taken on such a critical role in disaster relief. A seasoned Army combat veteran, he has previously provided assistance during various emergencies, including Hurricanes Nicole and Ian in his home district. His rescue efforts also extended to the international stage, where he supported relief operations for Israelis following the tragic events of October 7, and helped rescue vulnerable individuals in Haiti. Notably, Mills played a crucial role in one of the earliest successful overland rescues during the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, conducting dozens of rescues amidst turmoil.

Mills understands the urgency that accompanies natural disasters and the often slow response from federal agencies. "The federal government, with its bureaucracy, moves too slow for the pace in which emergencies and often chaos actually moves," he remarked. In response, he has witnessed an increase in civilian groups—many composed of former military and law enforcement personnel—banding together to provide immediate aid where it's needed most. This grassroots mobilization has become vital in regions affected by Hurricane Helene.
Partnering with Mercury One, a private helicopter company, Mills and his team have been delivering essential supplies, including food, water, diapers, insulin, and oxygen, since Monday. Their efforts have resulted in thousands of pounds of supplies reaching the hardest-hit areas in North Carolina. Mills has also coordinated search and rescue operations in multiple towns, such as Bernardsville, Poplar, and Burnsville, demonstrating his commitment to not only deliver supplies but also assist in locating those who may still be in danger.
"Anytime there's any type of devastation or Americans that are in jeopardy, it piques my attention," Mills explained, expressing a sense of duty as an elected official to assist citizens, regardless of their location. By collaborating with local response teams, he has identified priority areas to deliver aid to those who have been cut off from basic necessities, including communication services, for days.
As rescue teams extend their operations into neighboring states affected by the storm, the situation remains critical. Hundreds of thousands are still without power or cell service, complicating efforts to connect families separated by the hurricane. The ongoing response in North Carolina, as well as the surrounding states of South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and Florida, illustrates the wide-ranging impact of Hurricane Helene and the collective effort to support those in need. Mills' actions reflect a profound commitment to public service, illustrating that when faced with challenges, individuals can come together to make a difference, echoing the spirit of resilience that defines the American people.
