Dodgers Hope Freddie Freeman Returns for Critical NLDS Game 3 Against Padres
As the Los Angeles Dodgers prepare for a pivotal Game 3 in the NL Division Series against the San Diego Padres, the team is hopeful that their All-Star first baseman, Freddie Freeman, will return to the lineup. Freeman left Game 2 after five innings, dealing with discomfort in his sprained right ankle, a situation that left Dodger fans anxious ahead of the next critical game. The Dodgers lost Game 2 in a lopsided 10-2 defeat, allowing the Padres to even the series at one game apiece.
Freddie Freeman's absence in the latter part of Game 2 raised concerns, as his powerful presence in the Dodgers' lineup is crucial. Freeman was replaced at first base by Max Muncy, while Kiké Hernández came in to cover third. Prior to leaving, Freeman had gone hitless in two at-bats, striking out once and flying out. His contributions in Game 1, where he managed two hits, were much more in line with what fans and the Dodgers had hoped to see from the veteran star.

Manager Dave Roberts addressed Freeman's status following Monday's off-day workout at Petco Park. Roberts acknowledged that Freeman was still feeling sore but indicated optimism regarding his return for Game 3. Roberts stated, “The thought is he’s going to play tomorrow. If he can’t, then he won’t. But again, if he’s able to play and post, he’ll be in there.” It’s a delicate balance for the Dodgers as they assess Freeman’s condition—while his offensive skills are much needed, risking further injury could have long-term repercussions.
Freeman himself admitted that this is the first time he’s ever sprained an ankle. While such injuries typically require a recovery period of four to six weeks, Freeman has been receiving treatment in the hope of making a quick return. Throughout the regular season, Freeman has been a key player, both offensively and defensively, in the Dodgers’ stellar season. As the No. 3 hitter in the lineup behind Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani, Freeman's bat is pivotal to the Dodgers' success. Furthermore, his presence on defense at first base is irreplaceable, adding to the pressure of getting him back on the field.
Injuries have been a challenge for Freeman this season—he missed 15 regular-season games due to other ailments and a family medical situation involving his young son. Nevertheless, Freeman's resilience and importance to the Dodgers are undeniable, and fans are eagerly awaiting confirmation of his status for Game 3.
With the series now tied at 1-1, the Dodgers cannot afford to lose momentum. The Padres have proven to be a formidable opponent, and every game in this five-game series is crucial. The stakes are high, and having Freeman back in the lineup could be the spark the Dodgers need to regain control of the series. Whether or not he plays, the Dodgers' ability to adapt and compete will be put to the test on Tuesday night.
