Dominic Solanke Earns Long-Awaited England Call-Up as Maguire and Rogers Miss Out

Dominic Solanke has been called up to the England squad for the first time in seven years, marking a significant milestone in the striker's career. The Tottenham Hotspur forward has been in excellent form recently, which has clearly caught the eye of England's interim head coach, Lee Carsley. Solanke’s recall comes after a strong start to the season with Spurs, where he's already scored three goals in six games since his £65 million transfer from Bournemouth. His consistent performances have earned him the long-awaited chance to represent his country once again. This recall comes seven years after his only previous England cap, which he earned in a friendly against Brazil in 2017.

Interestingly, Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers, who has also been performing admirably in the Premier League this season, has been overlooked for a senior squad call-up. Rogers, who has one goal and two assists to his name in eight appearances for Villa across both the Premier League and Champions League, will remain part of the Under-21 setup for now. His omission from the senior squad is somewhat surprising given his standout form for Aston Villa, where he has emerged as a key figure under manager Unai Emery.

On the other hand, Manchester United's Harry Maguire also finds himself left out of the squad. Despite featuring for England last month, the defender’s absence follows a period of inconsistent form and injury struggles. Maguire, who has been sidelined recently due to a calf injury, is now facing stiff competition at Manchester United from the likes of Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs De Ligt. This exclusion gives him the opportunity to focus on regaining full fitness during the international break, after missing United's last Premier League fixture.

In another notable decision, James Maddison, a teammate of Solanke at Tottenham, and West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen have also been omitted. Maddison, who has contributed a goal and two assists this season for Spurs, hasn't featured for England since he was cut from the preliminary squad for the European Championship. Bowen's strong form for West Ham also wasn't enough to earn him a spot.

Despite these exclusions, Chelsea’s young defender Levi Colwill has retained his place in the squad, following impressive performances in England’s Nations League fixtures last month. England is set to face Greece and Finland in their upcoming Nations League matches, with Solanke now looking to add to his solitary international cap and prove his worth on the international stage.

It’s been a long road back to the national team for Solanke, who has shown resilience in rebuilding his career after several ups and downs. From his early promise at Liverpool to becoming a prolific scorer for Bournemouth and now Spurs, his recall is a testament to his hard work and growth as a player. His ability to press, link up play, and score crucial goals make him a valuable addition to England’s attacking options. With Kane, Toney, and Watkins missing, this could be Solanke’s moment to shine on the international stage.
