Elon Musk Unveils Tesla Cybercab, a Fully Autonomous Robotaxi with No Steering Wheel
At Tesla’s highly anticipated “We, Robot” event, Elon Musk revealed the groundbreaking Cybercab, a fully autonomous robotaxi that promises to revolutionize urban transportation. One of the standout features of the Cybercab is its lack of a steering wheel or pedals, making it a true self-driving vehicle. Musk announced that the Cybercab would be priced under $30,000 and is expected to enter production by 2026, or “before 2027” as he humorously corrected himself during the presentation. This futuristic vehicle is designed for inductive charging, eliminating the need for traditional plugs, and aims to make affordable, autonomous driving a reality for the masses.
The event itself was a spectacle, with Musk arriving in a Cybercab, flanked by a man in a space suit and human-like robots mingling with the crowd. Attendees were treated to demonstrations of Tesla’s self-driving technology, with 50 fully autonomous vehicles available for test drives across the 20-acre space at Warner Bros. Studios in California.

The Cybercab is expected to mark a new chapter for Tesla, with Musk envisioning a future where cars like these could serve as Uber-style robotaxis when not in use by their owners. He even suggested that people could set up their own fleets of Cybercabs, creating a decentralized ridesharing network. Musk’s vision extends beyond personal convenience; he sees autonomous driving as a way to drastically reduce traffic accidents and injuries, with Tesla’s vast amount of driving data making their AI far superior to human drivers. According to Musk, autonomous vehicles will be 10 to 30 times safer than cars driven by humans.
Tesla also introduced another futuristic vehicle: the Robovan, a larger autonomous van designed to carry up to 20 passengers. While no specific details on pricing or production timelines were shared, the Robovan is expected to be part of Tesla's larger vision for autonomous transportation.
Adding to the futuristic vibe of the event, Musk showcased the Optimus humanoid robots, which he says are also making significant progress. These robots danced and served drinks during the event, hinting at a future where robotics and AI play a bigger role in daily life.
Tesla’s autonomous driving advancements come at a time when the company is facing scrutiny over its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. A class-action lawsuit is ongoing in the United States from owners who claim they were promised self-driving features that have yet to be delivered. Despite this, Musk remains optimistic, touting the potential of Tesla’s technology to create a safer, more efficient future for transportation.
