Elon Musk’s Secret Contacts with Putin Raise Global Security Concerns
A new report has shed light on a surprising connection between tech billionaire Elon Musk and Russian President Vladimir Putin, revealing that Musk has been in confidential talks with Putin since 2022. These interactions, reported by The Wall Street Journal, come at a particularly delicate time, as tensions mount globally over issues like the war in Ukraine and U.S.-Russia relations. Musk’s continued contact with Putin, spanning over a year, reportedly included discussions on various issues, extending even into this year.
One key element that has raised eyebrows is Musk’s involvement in the U.S. election campaign, where his public support leans towards Republican candidate and former President Donald Trump. As Musk voiced growing criticisms of U.S. military assistance to Ukraine, his connections with Putin appear to play into a larger geopolitical narrative. According to the report, Putin has allegedly requested Musk’s cooperation in limiting access to Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service. Specifically, Putin reportedly asked him not to enable Starlink over Taiwan to appease China, a close Russian ally, as requested by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Musk’s Starlink system is a critical player in the satellite internet space and has had a significant impact on the Ukrainian conflict. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Musk provided Starlink services to Ukraine, initially viewed as a strategic aid enabling Ukraine to maintain communications under Russian assault. However, the relationship became strained when Musk restricted Ukraine's military access to Starlink, curtailing its use for drone control, a key technology in modern warfare. Musk’s outspoken views on Ukraine, including tweets echoing Kremlin perspectives under the guise of “peace plans,” faced backlash from Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Notably, Ukraine’s military intelligence recently reported that Starlink is now being used by Russian forces on the front lines, a concerning development for Ukrainian officials.
Adding to the intrigue, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has downplayed the contacts, citing only a single call where Musk and Putin discussed “space and technology.” Yet, the U.S. government remains largely in the dark on the extent of Musk’s relationship with the Kremlin. High-level officials have expressed concern about the influence Musk wields through his tech empire, particularly given his government contracts and access to classified information.
For now, Musk has not commented on the new revelations, leaving questions about the full extent of his connections with Putin.
