Fans Disappointed as McDonald's McRib Returns with a Major Change
McDonald’s much-loved McRib is back in the UK after nearly a decade, but not everyone is happy about its return. The sandwich, famous for its pork patty drenched in barbecue sauce and topped with onions and pickles, has seen a significant shift in how it's prepared. Fans who were eagerly waiting for its October 16 return have voiced their frustration over one notable change: the reduction of sauce on the patty.
In the past, the McRib was known for its juicy, sauce-soaked pork patty, which was submerged in barbecue sauce before being assembled with the other ingredients. However, according to recent reports and viral TikTok videos, McDonald’s has altered this process. Instead of soaking the patty, the new preparation involves simply squirting the barbecue sauce from a bottle onto the bun. The result is a sandwich that appears much drier than the original version. Fans and former McDonald’s employees alike have been quick to voice their displeasure, with many expressing that the new McRib "just won’t be the same."

One TikTok video demonstrated the new process, and the comment section quickly filled with disappointed reactions. One fan remarked, "Not a proper McRib! Back in the day, it was kept in the unit with barbecue sauce submerging it." Another added, "I was looking forward to this, but now that I’ve seen what they’ve done to the McRib, I won’t bother." Many have suggested asking for extra sauce to compensate for the change.
Despite the backlash, McDonald’s responded by reassuring fans that the McRib’s flavor hasn’t changed, though the way the sauce is applied has been simplified to make things easier for staff. The company emphasized that it still delivers the “iconic McRib sauce” fans have always loved, but the modification is part of streamlining kitchen procedures.
The McRib has a loyal following, and its sporadic returns have only intensified the anticipation among fans. Originally launched in 1981, it has since gained a cult-like status, with many eagerly awaiting its rare appearances on the menu. In the UK, the McRib hasn’t been available since December 2014, so this return has been highly anticipated. However, the change in preparation may cause some longtime fans to rethink their excitement.
This isn’t the first time McDonald’s has adjusted its menu offerings, as they often update and rotate limited-time items. But the alteration of something as iconic as the McRib has left many fans feeling that their beloved sandwich just isn’t what it used to be. As the McRib is only available while stocks last, those eager to try it again will have a limited time to judge the new version for themselves.
Time will tell whether the return of the McRib will meet the expectations of its nostalgic fans or if this change marks the end of an era for the saucy sandwich.
