Félix Auger-Aliassime Kicks Off Swiss Indoors Title Defence with Strong Win Over Baez
Félix Auger-Aliassime, the rising tennis star from Canada, has started his title defence at the Swiss Indoors tournament in Basel in commanding fashion. In a thrilling opening-round match, Auger-Aliassime secured a solid victory over Argentina’s Sebastian Baez, winning 7-5, 6-1. This win advances him to the second round and keeps his momentum going as he aims to hold onto the title he’s won twice before.
The match started with a tightly contested first set, where both players fought hard to keep their serves intact. However, it was Auger-Aliassime who managed to break Baez in the crucial 12th game. Baez, ranked 26th in the world, misfired a return, sending the ball long and giving Auger-Aliassime the edge he needed to claim the set 7-5. This break of serve proved decisive and set the tone for the rest of the match.

The second set was a dominant display from the 24-year-old Montreal native. Auger-Aliassime took an early 2-0 lead, breaking Baez’s serve and building his confidence. From there, he never looked back, breaking Baez again in the sixth game to gain full control. His aggressive and precise play was highlighted by his powerful serving—he racked up eight aces in the match, finishing it off in style.
This victory improves Auger-Aliassime’s head-to-head record against Baez to 2-0. The Canadian previously defeated Baez in straight sets during the Davis Cup group stage back in September. With this win, he continues his journey in Basel, where he triumphed last year as a wild card entry, defeating Poland's Hubert Hurkacz in the final to claim the 2022 title. He also bested Denmark's Holger Rune in the 2022 final, marking his fourth tournament victory of that remarkable year.
Ranked 19th in the world and seeded eighth in this tournament, Auger-Aliassime will now face France's Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the next round. With his recent form and determination, he remains a strong contender to once again lift the Swiss Indoors trophy.
It’s an exciting time for Canadian tennis fans, as Auger-Aliassime continues to shine on the international stage, building on his growing legacy in the sport.
