Five Killed, Including Two Children, in Tragic M6 Crash Near Tebay
A devastating crash occurred on the M6 motorway on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, claiming the lives of five people, including two children. The tragic collision happened near the Tebay services in Cumbria at approximately 4:04 PM BST. Cumbria Police reported that a family from Glasgow, consisting of a man, a woman, and two children, were travelling in a Toyota when they were involved in a head-on collision with a Skoda driven by a man from Cambridgeshire. All five individuals, including the driver of the Skoda, were pronounced dead at the scene.
A third child, also in the Toyota, survived the crash but was critically injured. The child was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle by the Great North Air Ambulance, where they remain in serious condition, receiving urgent medical care.

The incident, which took place on the northbound carriageway of the M6, resulted in the motorway being closed between Junctions 36 and 39 for several hours. Emergency services, including Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, North West Ambulance Service, and volunteer medics from Beep Doctors, attended the scene. It was a coordinated effort, with fire engines from nearby towns such as Penrith and Kendal responding to the incident, and crews staying at the scene for several hours to assist with rescue efforts and manage the aftermath.
Eyewitnesses described the horror of the scene. Chris Isles, a local publican from Penrith, was just 50 yards away from the crash when he found himself stuck in traffic for over three hours. He recalled seeing thick black smoke rising into the sky and flames consuming one of the vehicles. He described the immediate aftermath as terrifying and expressed shock at the scale of the tragedy, never imagining that the accident would claim five lives.
Cumbria Police are now appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the crash or have dashcam footage to come forward as investigations continue. This tragic event has left families mourning, and specially trained officers are offering support to those affected.
