French Actor Michel Blanc, Star of "Les Bronzés," Passes Away at 72
French cinema has lost one of its beloved figures, as Michel Blanc, known for his iconic roles in films like Les Bronzés , passed away on the night of October 3rd to 4th, 2024, at the age of 72. His death was confirmed by his entourage, leaving fans and colleagues alike in mourning. Blanc had been hospitalized after a cardiac episode and could not recover. Gérard Jugnot, his longtime friend and fellow member of the Splendid troupe, expressed his grief on Instagram, poignantly saying, "Putain Michel... What have you done to us?"
Michel Blanc was much more than just a comedic actor. His career spanned several decades, with his talents reaching beyond acting into screenwriting and directing. Blanc first gained widespread recognition through Les Bronzés , a cult classic in French cinema, where he played the awkward and endearing character Jean-Claude Dusse. He often reflected on this role with mixed feelings, acknowledging that although it made him a household name, it also left him somewhat typecast. Nevertheless, he embraced the character’s popularity and the film’s enduring impact on French pop culture.

Blanc’s career evolved significantly after Les Bronzés , with standout performances in both comedies and dramas. His role in Tenue de Soirée (1986), directed by Bertrand Blier, was a turning point. In this film, Blanc portrayed Antoine, a deeply emotional character who challenges societal norms, earning him the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival. He later won a César Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2012 for his role in L’Exercice de l’État .
Despite his success, Blanc remained humble, often shying away from the limelight. His long-term relationship with Senegalese fashion designer Ramatoulaye Diop, which lasted over a decade, was kept private, a testament to his desire to keep his personal life separate from his public persona.
As tributes pour in from across the entertainment world, Blanc is remembered not only for his iconic roles but also for his ability to navigate both the lighter and darker sides of human nature in his work. His legacy as a key figure in French cinema, a talented actor, director, and writer, will endure for years to come.
