In memory of Baldock, both England and Greece’s national teams will wear black armbands and observe a moment of silence before their Nations League match at Wembley. Despite calls from the Greek Football Federation to postpone the game, UEFA decided the fixture must go ahead due to scheduling constraints. The emotional impact of Baldock’s passing has been deeply felt within the Greek squad. Many of his teammates at Panathinaikos, where he moved after seven years at Sheffield United, were close friends and have expressed their shock and grief, describing the loss as “indescribable.”
Baldock was an England-born player with Greek roots, qualifying to play for the Greek national team through his grandmother. He made his international debut in 2022 and earned 12 caps for Greece. Throughout his career, he was well-regarded for his defensive skills, loyalty, and team spirit. His journey began at MK Dons, with various loan stints before becoming a key figure at Sheffield United, where he helped the club achieve promotion to the Premier League twice. His departure to Greece in the summer had marked a new chapter in his career, which was tragically cut short.
Although initial investigations suggest Baldock drowned, authorities are still awaiting toxicology results and have confirmed there are no signs of foul play. As players and fans mourn his untimely death, Thursday’s match will undoubtedly be an emotional occasion, with both teams coming together to honor his memory.
