During a difficult period of his life, Nairn became involved with an individual whose drug habits spiraled into serious addiction for both of them. Nairn recounts vivid details of this dark phase in his life, including heavy cocaine use and frequent all-night DJ sets fueled by amphetamines, ecstasy, and alcohol. His physical and mental health started to decline rapidly, leading to what he describes as a near-fatal ketamine overdose. It was this turning point that pushed him to isolate himself in a bungalow in Ireland, where he played World of Warcraft from sunrise to sunset as a way to detox and distract himself from the cravings and withdrawals.
Nairn credits World of Warcraft not only with giving him a form of escape but also with providing a positive outlet for his obsessive tendencies. He describes himself as a "collector and completist" within the game, focusing on acquiring rare items, mounts, and gear. Through the game, he found a sense of purpose and community that was essential during his recovery, helping him replace the destructive habits of drug use with healthier engagement in gaming. For Nairn, WoW was a way to withdraw from the world in a healthier manner, helping him cope with loneliness and giving him access to a global network of friends.
Beyond the gaming aspects, Nairn reflects on the healing nature of the game’s evolving world, emphasizing that it allowed him to balance his mental health while still indulging in his passion. The game provided him the necessary distractions during his recovery, and the connection with fellow players over time became a crucial support system for him. As an actor and DJ with a busy, often isolating, life on tour, Nairn still finds comfort in WoW and the friendships he's formed there.
While he acknowledges that gaming addiction can also have its downsides, for Nairn, World of Warcraft became a lifesaver, literally pulling him back from the brink of destruction and allowing him to rebuild his life. His story serves as a powerful reminder of the unexpected ways people can find support and healing in their lowest moments.
