John Nettles Declines Cameo in UpcomingBergeracReboot

Fans of the classic TV series Bergerac will be excited to know that a reboot of the iconic show is on its way. However, one notable absence from the cast has been confirmed—John Nettles, the original star of the series, has declined an offer to make a cameo appearance. Nettles, who played Detective Jim Bergerac from 1981 to 1991, explained his decision, stating that while he holds fond memories of the show, he feels it's time to move on.

At 82, Nettles expressed that although he was approached with a role in the reboot, he chose not to take part. In a candid and somewhat humorous reflection, he admitted that while he still harbors some "thespian narcissism," the thought of returning to his role no longer appeals to him. He emphasized that the Bergerac series is a beloved part of his past and that, for him, reviving the character would be neither necessary nor appropriate in this new format.

The original Bergerac captured the spirit of its time, showcasing the scenic beauty of Jersey against the backdrop of 1980s culture—lightheartedness, quirky fashion, and the carefree ambiance of the era. Nettles reminisced about those days, describing them as some of the happiest times of his life. But, as he pointed out, things have changed greatly since then, and the tone of the reboot is expected to reflect a grittier, more modern version of Jersey and the crime drama genre.

Nettles has been approached before for cameo roles in potential Bergerac revivals. He recalls entertaining the idea of a previous storyline where Jim Bergerac’s daughter returns as a detective to help her retired father with a new crime wave. However, this time around, Nettles is clear—it's a firm "no." He humorously described himself as being “too old” and retired, suggesting that bringing him back could disrupt the flow and integrity of the new production.

Despite his absence, Nettles has expressed his well wishes for the reboot, praising the cast of the upcoming series. The role of Jim Bergerac will be taken up by Damien Molony, a choice Nettles approved of, even jesting that Molony may be a "better actor" than he is. The cast will also feature prominent names such as Zoë Wanamaker and Philip Glenister, adding to the excitement surrounding the series.

Though fans may be disappointed not to see Nettles reprising his role, there is plenty to look forward to in this fresh adaptation. Set to air in 2025 on UKTV’s Drama channel, the new Bergerac promises a darker, grittier tone while still preserving the charm of the original that captured audiences' hearts over 30 years ago. While the original may remain in the past, the reboot is poised to introduce Bergerac to a whole new generation of viewers.
