La Ville Lumiere Brings a Taste of France to Cleveland
Cleveland has just welcomed a delightful new addition to its culinary landscape: La Ville Lumiere, a French brasserie that officially opened its doors in late September. This charming establishment, located at the site of the former Clifton Martini & Wine Bar, underwent a significant six-month renovation, completely transforming the space to reflect the inviting atmosphere of a traditional brasserie. Chef and owner Kevin O’Connell, with over 30 years of experience in the restaurant industry, is excited to share his vision for a dining experience that combines comfort, quality, and classic French cuisine.
The name "La Ville Lumiere," which translates to "City of Light," pays homage not only to Paris but also to Cleveland's historic distinction as the first city to illuminate a public space with electric arc lamps in Public Square. This dual reference speaks to both the inspiration behind the restaurant and the vibrant spirit of Cleveland itself.
Chef O’Connell’s journey began in Buffalo, New York, but it was in Los Angeles where he first found his passion for cooking. His rapid ascent through the ranks of the restaurant industry—from prepping salads to becoming an executive chef—prepared him for his next chapter. After moving to Cleveland in 2020, he launched both the Cleveland Sandwich Co. and the Cleveland Supper Club. Now, with La Ville Lumiere, he is focused on delivering a unique dining experience that Cleveland has been waiting for.

La Ville Lumiere is designed to be an approachable, all-day dining spot. O’Connell emphasizes that his restaurant is all about creating an inviting atmosphere without the intimidation that can sometimes accompany fine dining. “I don’t want people to be afraid of the tablecloths,” he asserts. The beautifully decorated space, featuring tile and wood floors, mirrors, and shades of blue, sets the stage for an enjoyable meal.
The menu showcases a variety of classic French dishes, from starters like Caesar salad, escargot, and steak tartare to main courses such as bouillabaisse and a selection of expertly prepared meats and seafood. O’Connell ensures that the kitchen staff handcrafts breads and pastries, prioritizing quality in every aspect of the dining experience. For those seeking something a bit more indulgent, the shellfish tower is sure to impress.
In addition to the food, La Ville Lumiere boasts a well-curated cocktail and wine list. While many establishments focus on craft cocktails, O’Connell aims to deliver well-made classics. Diners can enjoy favorites like the Negroni, French 75, and old-fashioned, alongside an impressive selection of wines—90 percent of which are from France. For those with a taste for the extraordinary, the Captain’s List offers selections from a private cellar, featuring rare vintages such as the 1964 Chateau Palmer.
With a cozy capacity of just 42 seats, La Ville Lumiere offers a personalized dining experience. The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to midnight, catering to those looking for a place to unwind after a game or show. O’Connell plans to enhance the space further by adding a Gatsbyesque library-style room in January, complete with a craft cocktail bar, creating an even more inviting environment for patrons.
In a city known for its rich history and culinary diversity, La Ville Lumiere stands out as a beacon of quality and hospitality. As O’Connell puts it, his goal is to ensure every guest leaves with a smile, and he is committed to filling seats with happy diners night after night. Clevelanders now have a delightful place to savor classic French cuisine and create lasting memories, all in the heart of their beloved city.
