Lonzo Ball Faces New Setback Just After NBA Comeback
Lonzo Ball, the Chicago Bulls' promising guard, has encountered another hurdle just three games into his highly anticipated return to the NBA. After more than two seasons on the sidelines due to severe knee issues, Ball’s comeback has taken a painful turn. The injury occurred during Monday night’s nail-biting 126-123 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies, where Ball sprained his right wrist.
The Bulls confirmed the injury on Tuesday, revealing that an MRI showed Ball has suffered between a Grade 1 and Grade 2 wrist sprain. While the injury is not to his troublesome left knee, which has already required multiple surgeries and extensive rehabilitation, it is still a significant setback for Ball. He is set to be reevaluated in ten days, leaving fans and teammates anxious about his recovery.

In his brief return, Ball averaged 4.7 points, 3.7 assists, and 2.7 rebounds over 15.7 minutes per game. His shooting stats were modest, hitting 35.7% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc. Yet, the impact he had on the court was evident, and his absence will be felt by a Bulls team looking to make strides this season.
The 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons were completely lost for Ball, who first faced complications in January 2022, when he was initially diagnosed with a bone bruise that escalated into a meniscus tear, leading to three surgeries. After his last procedure—a cartilage transplant last March—there were serious doubts about whether he would ever return to the game. However, against the odds, he returned to action this season, greeted by a standing ovation from fans who recognized his resilience and determination.
Ball's current outlook seems cautious. He expressed his desire to avoid further injury, stating, “If I play on it right now while it’s still swollen, it could get to a Grade 3. That would require surgery.” His primary goal now is to allow the swelling to subside and hopefully return to the court as soon as possible.
The basketball community is rooting for Ball as he navigates this challenging phase of his career. It’s a reminder of the physical demands placed on athletes and the resilience required to bounce back from injury. Lonzo Ball has shown time and again that he has the determination to fight through adversity, and fans are hoping this latest setback will only be a minor bump on his road to recovery. The Bulls, while disappointed, are also optimistic that they will see their point guard back on the court sooner rather than later, continuing to contribute to their quest for a successful season.
