NBA Star Anthony Edwards Eyes Historic Switch to NFL, But Justin Jefferson Isn’t Convinced
Anthony Edwards, the dynamic young star of the Minnesota Timberwolves, has set his sights on an extraordinary career switch—moving from the NBA to the NFL. This isn't just speculation. Edwards himself recently declared that, if he wins an NBA Championship within the next three to four years, he plans to transition to professional football. While Edwards is known for his bold claims and confidence, this one has certainly caught the attention of both the NBA and NFL worlds.

During a conversation on ESPN’s Cover Story with Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson, Edwards made this surprising statement, adding, “Football players can’t go play basketball. No way. I told my buddies, if I win a ring in the next three to four years, I’m going to play football.” Jefferson, the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history, quickly pushed back, saying, “No, you’re not.”
Edwards’ plan would be unprecedented in modern sports. While Michael Jordan famously switched from the NBA to baseball in the mid-90s, no NBA player has ever transitioned to the NFL successfully. Edwards, however, appears undaunted. As a two-time NBA All-Star and one of the league’s most promising young players, he has already demonstrated his athletic versatility. But even though he played multiple positions in youth football and excelled at several sports, making the leap to the NFL is a completely different challenge.
Edwards isn’t just a confident talker; he’s backed it up on the court since being drafted first overall in 2020. With his incredible physical abilities—standing 6'4" and weighing 225 pounds—he believes he could thrive as a wide receiver or in another skill position in the NFL. His NFL dreams mirror some of the aspirations of other NBA stars, including LeBron James, who was also a top football prospect in high school.
Despite the skepticism from Jefferson and others, Edwards remains focused on his NBA goals for now, hoping to lead the Timberwolves to championship glory. If he succeeds, his switch to the NFL could make him one of the most talked-about multi-sport athletes in history. While the odds may be against him, the journey of Anthony Edwards from NBA to NFL is one that would capture the imagination of sports fans everywhere.
