New Toronto Area Code 942 Set for Introduction in 2025
In an important update for Toronto residents, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has announced that a new area code, 942, will be introduced in the region starting April 26, 2025. This new code will join the existing ones—416, 437, and 647—that are already in use across the city. The move is driven by the growing demand for telephone numbers in Ontario, as the city continues to expand in population and businesses, increasing the need for more numbering options.
This gradual introduction of the 942 area code means that from April 2025 onward, anyone applying for a new phone number, whether they are individuals or businesses, might be assigned this new code. However, the change will not affect the functionality of existing phone numbers, nor will it alter the geographical regions covered by the current codes. In essence, it’s an expansion of capacity without disrupting the current systems.

Kelly T. Walsh, Program Manager of the Canadian Numbering Administrator, emphasized in a recent statement that this expansion will allow millions of additional phone numbers to be assigned, accommodating Toronto’s rapid growth. The new area code will cover the same geographic region as the current ones and will be seamlessly integrated into the city’s telecommunication systems.
Toronto’s phone system is already fairly complex, with its three existing area codes. Surrounding regions, such as the Golden Horseshoe, use codes like 905, 289, 365, and 742, encompassing areas like Niagara, Hamilton, and parts of Durham and Peel. The addition of 942 in Toronto is simply the latest in a long line of necessary adaptations to the modern world’s communication needs. It is a response to the increasing pressure on telecommunication infrastructure from both population growth and technological developments, including mobile phones and Internet-based services.
The introduction of a new area code is always an interesting milestone in a city's development, and it speaks to the ongoing progress Toronto is making. While the CRTC’s decision won’t require any immediate action from current phone users, it’s a notable event for anyone involved in the local business, telecommunications, or urban planning sectors. So, starting in 2025, don’t be surprised if you see the new 942 area code popping up around town!
