Piastri's Stellar Performance in Mexico City GP FP3 Sets Stage for Qualifying Showdown
In an exciting lead-up to the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri of McLaren showcased his extraordinary skills by topping the third and final practice session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Piastri clocked in a blistering lap time of 1:16.492, narrowly beating his teammate Lando Norris, who finished just 0.059 seconds behind. This impressive McLaren 1-2 finish certainly sets a high bar as the teams gear up for the crucial qualifying session later today.
After a tumultuous start to the weekend, marked by multiple red flags and a Pirelli tire test that disrupted the opening day, this final hour-long practice provided drivers with a valuable opportunity to make critical adjustments to their cars. Piastri's performance stood out as he expertly navigated the circuit, proving that he and his team have recovered well from the challenges faced earlier in the weekend. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, who rounded out the top three with a time of 1:16.834, demonstrated competitive pace, but the McLaren duo seemed to have the upper hand.

Mercedes faced its own hurdles during the practice session. George Russell's car required extensive repairs after a crash in FP2, leading the team to break curfew to get his vehicle back in shape. Despite these setbacks, both Russell and reigning world champion Max Verstappen were quick off the line, vying for the fastest lap times in the early moments of the session. However, Verstappen reported difficulties with rear grip, complicating his efforts to regain momentum after earlier engine issues linked to the air intake.
As the session progressed, the competition intensified. Sainz initially set the pace but was soon eclipsed by the McLaren drivers, who displayed remarkable teamwork and speed. Piastri’s blistering lap not only reaffirmed his growing status in Formula 1 but also showcased McLaren’s resurgence as a formidable force in the sport. Notably, Piastri's and Norris’s late-session improvements solidified their positions at the top, leaving other contenders, including Verstappen and Hamilton, to chase from behind.
The top five was rounded out by Lewis Hamilton, who expressed surprise at the performance gap between himself and the McLaren drivers. As the session drew to a close, Charles Leclerc slipped to sixth place, unable to capitalize on the track's evolving conditions as others found improved grip and pace. Meanwhile, Williams’ Alex Albon, after a tough start to the weekend, completed the top ten.
As the paddock buzzes with anticipation for qualifying, teams will meticulously analyze the data gathered during practice, making final tweaks to their setups. The excitement builds as the clock ticks down to the qualifying session, where drivers will battle for pole position and an advantageous start on race day. With McLaren looking strong and competitors like Ferrari and Mercedes eager to regain their footing, the stage is set for what promises to be a thrilling qualifying hour at the Mexico City Grand Prix.
