Sergio Perez's Future at Red Bull in Jeopardy as Marko Signals Change
Is Sergio Perez’s time at Red Bull Racing coming to an end? Helmut Marko, the senior advisor for Red Bull, has revealed that a decision regarding Perez’s future will be made at the end of the current season. Despite having signed a new two-year contract earlier this year, Marko stated that contracts are "useless" in Formula 1 if a driver is not performing. This is a clear indication that Red Bull is weighing its options for the 2025 season as Perez’s performance has significantly declined.
Since April, when Perez last stood on the podium at the Chinese Grand Prix, his results have been dismal. This alarming trend puts him under immense pressure, especially with a performance clause reportedly included in his new contract, which grants Red Bull the leeway to make a change if necessary. In fact, Perez narrowly escaped being replaced mid-season following his poor showing after the Belgian Grand Prix. At that time, he was over 100 points behind his teammate Max Verstappen, leading the team to consider alternatives.

The stakes are even higher now, as Perez's gap to Verstappen has expanded to a staggering 204 points. Recently, rumors circulated that Perez and Red Bull had orchestrated a plan for him to retire gracefully ahead of his home race in Mexico, but he quickly dismissed these claims. Nevertheless, the pressure intensifies with Liam Lawson stepping in for Daniel Ricciardo and impressing in his recent performances. Lawson’s strong showing at the United States Grand Prix, where he secured a ninth-place finish after starting from the back, has only added to the scrutiny surrounding Perez’s seat.
Marko’s comments on the situation further emphasize that performance is paramount at Red Bull. He stated, "At the end of the season, we will sit down together and decide who is the best team-mate for Verstappen at Red Bull." This implies that regardless of Perez’s contractual status, his future is not guaranteed if he fails to deliver results. Marko also praised Lawson’s performance, hinting that he might emerge as a serious contender for Perez's spot if things don’t improve.
In the grand scheme of things, Perez’s inability to contribute significantly alongside Verstappen could jeopardize Red Bull’s chances in the Constructors’ Championship. The team is currently trailing McLaren by 40 points and could potentially drop to third place if Ferrari continues to perform well. As the Mexican Grand Prix approaches, Perez faces a critical moment in his career, needing to turn around his fortunes and prove he deserves to remain with the team.
With so much uncertainty, it’s clear that the coming races will be crucial for Perez. As he heads into his home race, the pressure to perform has never been greater. Can he regain his footing and secure his position, or will Red Bull be forced to look elsewhere for Verstappen’s teammate in 2025? The answers lie in the upcoming races, and only time will tell what the future holds for Sergio Perez at Red Bull.
