South Africa Revokes ID of Beauty Queen Chidimma Adetshina Amid Nationality Dispute
Chidimma Adetshina, a beauty queen with Nigerian and South African roots, finds herself entangled in a nationality controversy that has led to South Africa revoking her identity documents. A former contestant in the Miss South Africa pageant, Adetshina was recently declared ineligible to compete due to questions about her nationality. This issue, which erupted into widespread xenophobic criticism, has placed her South African citizenship under scrutiny due to her parentage—her father is Nigerian, and her mother, Mozambican by birth, had acquired South African citizenship.

Initially, Adetshina was a promising contestant in the Miss South Africa competition until questions around her nationality led her to withdraw for safety and personal well-being. Her departure was driven by backlash from those who argued that her mixed heritage made her ineligible to represent South Africa. The Department of Home Affairs quickly responded by investigating her eligibility, noting potential identity theft by Adetshina’s mother in obtaining South African documents. The Department’s Director-General, Tommy Makhode, confirmed this week that since neither Adetshina nor her mother responded by the set deadline, both would lose their South African IDs. Additionally, the matter has been referred to a high-level investigative unit for possible further action.
Despite these challenges in South Africa, Adetshina’s journey took a positive turn when she was invited to participate in the Miss Universe Nigeria competition. Embracing her father’s heritage, she won the title and is now preparing to represent Nigeria on the international stage at the Miss Universe event. Reflecting on her path, Adetshina has expressed gratitude for the support she's received in Nigeria, describing her journey as a difficult but empowering experience. Although her ties to South Africa are now officially severed, she remains proud of her dual heritage, emphasizing her identity as both South African and Nigerian.
