Teen Attacker at Blundell's School Sentenced to Life for Brutal Hammer Assault

In a shocking and tragic case, a 17-year-old student from Blundell's School in Tiverton, Devon, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for attempting to murder two fellow students and a teacher. The attack, which took place in June of the previous year, involved the student using three claw hammers to viciously assault his victims while they slept in the boarding school. The attacker, whose identity has been withheld due to legal reasons, had planned the assault meticulously, waiting for the two boys to fall asleep before launching the brutal attack.

The court heard that the attacker, who was just 16 at the time, had become increasingly isolated, retreating into the online world, and was said to be under stress. Although he claimed to be sleepwalking during the attack and initially suggested he kept the hammers by his bedside for protection against a so-called "zombie apocalypse," the jury rejected this defense. His premeditated actions, including the deliberate acquisition of the hammers and his apparent obsession with violence and serial killers, were key factors in the verdict.

During the trial, the victims were described as having suffered severe injuries, including skull fractures, rib injuries, and internal bleeding. One of the boys sustained permanent brain damage due to bone fragments being driven into his skull, while the other, though still recovering, has shown remarkable improvement and went on to achieve excellent GCSE results.

The school’s housemaster, Henry Roffe-Silvester, who also became a victim when he attempted to intervene, was struck six times on the head with a hammer. His bravery, along with the efforts of staff, students, and medical teams, was crucial in preventing what could have been an even worse outcome.

Mrs. Justice Cutts, presiding over the case, stated that the boy posed a serious threat to society, citing the extreme danger of further violence. She acknowledged his autism spectrum disorder but emphasized that he was fully aware of his actions and had planned to kill his classmates. The court found him guilty of three counts of attempted murder, with a minimum sentence of 12 years before the possibility of parole.

This tragic incident has left the school community and families grappling with long-term consequences. The recovery of the victims has been difficult, but there is hope for their future as they work to rebuild their lives after such a terrifying experience. Meanwhile, the sentencing has brought a degree of closure, though the scars of that night remain.
