UK Braces for -5C Snow Blast in Early November, Highlands Worst Hit

As we move into November, the UK is preparing for a significant cold snap, with temperatures expected to plummet as low as -5C. Weather forecasts suggest that some areas will be more heavily affected by snow, with the Scottish Highlands predicted to be the worst hit.

According to WX Charts, which compiles data from Met Desk, the cold spell is expected to start on Monday, November 4. There is an 80% chance of snow in certain regions, particularly in Scotland’s higher elevations. The northern Pennines may also experience heavy snowfall, making northern England another area to watch. These cold conditions are driven by a northerly airflow that is bringing Arctic air down into the country.

Jim Dale, a senior meteorologist at British Weather Services, has commented on the coming cold spell, confirming the likelihood of snow in the northern regions. He pointed out that while snow in the south at this time of year is rare, it remains a possibility, especially in higher elevations. The focus for now is on the northern parts of the UK, where the snow will be more pronounced.

Additionally, James Madden of Exacta Weather has shared that this winter season could see several significant snow events. His forecast for November and December identifies at least three key periods when widespread snowfall is likely. He also noted that more transient snowfalls could occur throughout mid-to-late November and December, suggesting the UK should prepare for more cold snaps beyond early November.

While the Met Office expects the start of November to be relatively calm and dry, they anticipate unsettled conditions to follow from November 5 onwards. Rain and showers will become more prevalent, especially towards mid-month, as lower pressure systems take hold. Temperatures will be below average at first but are expected to recover slightly as the unsettled weather moves in.

So, while early November may start with some settled weather, colder temperatures and snow are on the horizon. Those in Scotland’s Highlands, northern England, and other high-altitude areas should brace for sub-zero temperatures and possible heavy snowfalls as early as November 4.
