Utah Hockey Club Celebrates Historic 5-2 Victory in Inaugural NHL Game
The Utah Hockey Club made a spectacular debut in the NHL, winning their first-ever game with a 5-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks in front of a packed crowd at the Delta Center. From the moment Lauri Markkanen of the NBA’s Utah Jazz dropped the ceremonial puck, the energy in the arena was electric. The sellout crowd of over 11,000 fans roared in anticipation as the NHL’s newest team took to the ice for the first time.
Dylan Guenther cemented his place in Utah Hockey Club history by scoring the franchise’s first goal just under five minutes into the game. The 20-year-old winger fired a powerful one-timer, sending the crowd into a frenzy and setting the tone for what was to be an unforgettable night. The momentum continued as captain Clayton Keller added a goal in the first period, and Barrett Hayton tipped in another in the second to give Utah a commanding 3-0 lead.

Despite the Blackhawks mounting a late-game push, with goals from Teuvo Teravainen and Nick Foligno narrowing the lead to 3-2, Utah held their ground. Goaltender Connor Ingram came up with critical saves, including a crucial breakaway stop that kept the Blackhawks from tying the game. Guenther sealed the win with his second goal, an empty-netter, followed by a last-second score by Lawson Crouse to cap off the night.
The game was not only significant for the result but also for the atmosphere and excitement surrounding the event. From pre-game festivities featuring country artist Shaboozey to a flyover by fighter jets, the Delta Center buzzed with excitement. Fans, many of whom are new to hockey, rallied behind their team, cheering and chanting throughout the game. It was clear that the passion for the Utah Hockey Club had already taken root in Salt Lake City.
The Utah players and staff couldn’t have asked for a better start. Head coach Andre Tourigny praised his team’s poise, especially in the face of nerves and mounting pressure. "This is a moment we’ll never forget," Tourigny said, emphasizing the significance of the club’s first victory.
In a press conference, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman expressed his satisfaction with how the Smith Entertainment Group, the owners of both the Utah Hockey Club and the Utah Jazz, had met and exceeded the League’s expectations in setting up the franchise in just six months. The organization’s effort to build a team, establish a fanbase, and even renovate the arena in such a short time culminated in this historic night.
For the fans in Utah, this is just the beginning of what promises to be a thrilling season. With a strong start and a clear bond forming between the players and their supporters, the Utah Hockey Club is poised to make waves in the NHL. As Keller said after the game, “We couldn’t be more excited to play in front of them for the rest of the year.”
