Yankees Face Near-Impossible Comeback as Dodgers Edge Closer to World Series Win
In Game 3 of the 2024 World Series, the Dodgers pulled off a critical 4-2 victory over the New York Yankees, putting them just one win away from claiming the title. This puts Los Angeles up 3-0 in the best-of-seven series, a position that has historically been insurmountable in the World Series. For the Yankees, the game unfolded with tense moments and brief flashes of hope, yet they struggled to get any real momentum against the Dodgers’ sharp offense and solid pitching. Now, New York must win four straight games—an MLB feat accomplished only once, by the Red Sox in 2004—to avoid a sweep.
The Dodgers seized an early lead right from the top of the first inning when Freddie Freeman’s powerful home run put Los Angeles up 2-0. Despite Yankee Stadium’s boisterous crowd, rallying behind their home team, it was clear early on that the Yankees were in for a challenging game. Shohei Ohtani, recovering from a shoulder injury, managed a leadoff walk and helped set the tone for an aggressive Dodgers lineup that continued to push New York’s pitchers to their limits. Mookie Betts soon followed, driving in Tommy Edman for a 3-0 lead, a margin that looked imposing for a Yankees team that had yet to make any major offensive plays.

Yankees’ pitcher Clarke Schmidt couldn’t find his footing, and by the end of the third inning, he was pulled from the mound. Despite their defensive struggles, the Yankees had a few chances to turn the tide, including a moment when Giancarlo Stanton’s double in the fourth inning could have led to a crucial run. However, Dodgers’ outfielder Teoscar Hernandez threw a perfect line to the plate, tagging Stanton out and keeping the Yankees scoreless. With the Dodgers continuing to stymie any offensive attempts, the Yankees’ frustration only grew.
Walker Buehler’s performance on the mound for the Dodgers proved instrumental; he delivered five scoreless innings that shut down the Yankees’ bats and allowed the Dodgers to retain their lead. By the time Gavin Lux scored off an Enrique Hernandez hit in the sixth inning, Los Angeles was comfortably ahead at 4-0. Despite their defensive grit and a two-run homer from Alex Verdugo late in the ninth inning, the Yankees’ efforts were too little, too late.
Yankees fans are especially focused on the recent struggles of Aaron Judge, whose bat has largely been quiet throughout this postseason. After an incredible regular season, Judge’s lack of offensive production has been a disappointment in the playoffs, and he himself expressed frustration at not contributing as he hoped. His 0-for-3 night with a single walk underscored his slump, and his swings seemed increasingly off-target. With the Dodgers just one win away from the championship, Judge’s role will be critical if the Yankees hope to change the course of this series.
Game 4 will take place at Yankee Stadium, and the Yankees face immense pressure to stay alive in the series. For New York, pulling off a comeback would be historic, but it requires top performances from everyone on the roster, starting with Judge and the batting lineup.
