Youthful Tottenham Triumph in Hungary with 2-1 Europa League Victory Over Ferencvaros
Tottenham Hotspur continued their winning streak in the Europa League with a 2-1 victory over Hungarian side Ferencvaros. Ange Postecoglou took a bold approach, fielding a young Spurs side, which included four teenagers: Mikey Moore (17), Lucas Bergvall (18), Archie Gray (18), and striker Will Lankshear (19), making his senior debut. Despite their inexperience, this youthful lineup delivered an impressive performance, securing Tottenham’s second win in as many games in the competition.
The match kicked off under relentless rain in Budapest, but the young Spurs side showed no signs of being fazed by the conditions or the opposition. Mikey Moore, a standout on his first senior start, made an immediate impact. His energetic run down the right set up Tottenham’s first goal, with Pape Sarr pouncing on a loose ball in the box to fire home from close range in the 23rd minute. Ferencvaros had earlier thought they had taken the lead through Barnabas Varga, but his effort was ruled out for offside, keeping the game level until Spurs seized their moment.

Despite Ferencvaros rallying late in the first half, with Matheus Saldanha forcing a fine fingertip save from Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, Spurs held firm. Lankshear had a couple of chances to extend Tottenham’s lead, but he couldn't quite capitalize, and the game remained tight as it entered the final stages.
Postecoglou made key substitutions in the second half, introducing experienced players like Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski, and James Maddison to shore up the team's attack. Johnson’s impact was immediate—after rattling the crossbar earlier, he latched onto a pass from Moore and found the back of the net in the 86th minute to make it 2-0. Ferencvaros pulled one back in the 90th minute with Varga scoring a well-taken volley, but it proved to be merely a consolation as Tottenham held on for the win.
This victory places Tottenham firmly in control of their Europa League group with six points from two matches. With a youthful core stepping up and experienced players making the difference when it counted, Postecoglou’s gamble paid off. Spurs will aim to maintain their perfect record when they host Dutch club AZ Alkmaar in their next group stage fixture later this month.
