
American Airlines Adjusts Domestic Network with New Routes and a Route Cut
American Airlines is making significant updates to its domestic network, cutting one route while introducing several new flights across the United States. Starting with a route cut, American announced it would discontinue its service between Chicago (ORD) and Columbia, South Carolina (CAE) on January 8, 2025. This route, which began in July 2023, faced challenges in filling its 50-seat regional jets, leading the airline to ultimately decide on the termination. For travelers in Columbia, United Airlines will remain the sole provider of flights to Chicago, potentially impacting fare competition on this route.
On a brighter note, American is adding a much-anticipated daily service between Los Angeles (LAX) and Columbus, Ohio (CMH), resuming nonstop flights on this route from March 6, 2025. This route offers new options for the nearly 300 daily passengers who currently travel between the two cities, reflecting strong demand in this market. American’s decision is timely, as Spirit Airlines, the only other carrier offering direct flights between Los Angeles and Columbus, plans to discontinue its service early next year. With its Boeing 737-800 aircraft accommodating up to 172 passengers, American is prepared to meet this demand. This return to the Los Angeles-Columbus route, which American last operated in 2020, brings renewed convenience for business and leisure travelers alike.

Alongside this new service to Columbus, American has planned three seasonal routes from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to popular destinations in Florida. These limited-time flights will be operational in February 2025 to coincide with peak travel times around spring break. American will offer flights from Boston to Orlando (MCO) and Fort Myers (RSW) on multiple dates in February, catering to vacationers heading to Florida's sunny beaches. Additionally, in preparation for the Super Bowl in New Orleans (MSY) on February 11, 2025, American will offer special flights from Boston to New Orleans in early February to accommodate fans heading to the big game. With increased demand for travel during these peak periods, these routes showcase American's strategy to optimize its network capacity during high-demand times.
These adjustments reveal American’s strategic focus on high-demand markets and key seasonal peaks, with the carrier adding flights where demand is high while cutting routes that no longer serve passenger interests efficiently.
