ASU Football Secures Big 12 Title Path with Win Over BYU and Colorado's Loss to Kansas

ASU football is now in control of its own destiny when it comes to securing a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game. With a hard-fought 28-23 victory over BYU, combined with Colorado's surprising 37-21 defeat to Kansas, the Sun Devils have positioned themselves for a potential title game appearance. As long as they can secure a win over the Arizona Wildcats in next week’s Territorial Cup, ASU will be headed to Arlington, Texas, for the Big 12 Championship.

This marks a significant achievement for head coach Kenny Dillingham in his second season with the program. The Sun Devils have seen remarkable performances this year, notably from tailback Cam Skattebo, redshirt freshman quarterback Sam Leavitt, and wide receiver Jordyn Tyson. Skattebo has been exceptional, already surpassing 1,000 rushing yards and 300 receiving yards, making him one of the top playmakers in college football. His contribution has been a key factor in ASU’s success this season.

The coaching staff has also played a major role in ASU’s turnaround. Offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo, who has a history of working with top quarterbacks like Justin Herbert at Oregon, has developed a strong bond with Leavitt, helping him become a consistent and poised leader on the field. This connection has been crucial in Leavitt’s development as a freshman starter, with the quarterback’s preparation and on-field chemistry with Tyson highlighted by both players throughout the season.

On the defensive side, ASU’s coordinator, Brian Ward, has also made a significant impact. His defense has improved drastically from last season, allowing nine fewer points per game, and their ability to force turnovers has been a critical element of their success. These improvements in both offensive and defensive play have allowed ASU to compete at a high level and take control of their Big 12 title chase.

As the season nears its end, ASU is on the brink of its first 10-win season since 2014. This is a remarkable feat considering the program's struggles in recent years, including back-to-back three-win seasons prior to Dillingham's arrival. The Sun Devils now sit at 9-2 overall and 6-2 in the Big 12, tied for first place with BYU, Iowa State, and Colorado. If ASU can finish strong against Arizona, they will earn a spot in the championship game and have a chance to claim their first Big 12 title.

With the Sun Devils’ fate in their hands, the upcoming Territorial Cup will be crucial. Should they win, they will secure a place in the Big 12 Championship, where they will have an opportunity to prove themselves as one of the top teams in the conference. The momentum is on ASU's side, and all eyes will be on Tucson next week as they look to close out a successful season.
