Brock Purdy Out for Week 12 Against Packers; Brandon Allen to Start for Niners
In a major blow to the San Francisco 49ers, quarterback Brock Purdy has been ruled out for their Week 12 game against the Green Bay Packers due to shoulder soreness. This marks the first time in Purdy's career that he will miss a game due to injury. Head coach Kyle Shanahan expressed hope that the injury would only keep Purdy sidelined for one game, though he acknowledged the situation remains uncertain as Purdy's recovery progresses. The team will turn to backup quarterback Brandon Allen to lead the offense against the Packers.
Purdy's shoulder issue has caused significant concern. Initially, the injury seemed manageable after an MRI earlier in the week, which led the team to believe that rest would be enough to get him back on the field. However, when Purdy attempted to practice on Thursday, the soreness in his shoulder was more severe than anticipated, forcing the team to make the difficult decision to sit him out. Shanahan explained that while the MRI results were not alarming, the response from Purdy's shoulder during practice raised doubts about his ability to play. The coach stated that they would have to reassess the situation after the game and see how Purdy's shoulder feels moving forward.

Brandon Allen, who has made only nine career starts, will take over the starting role in Purdy’s absence. This will be Allen's first start since the final game of the 2021 season with the Cincinnati Bengals. Although Allen is relatively untested as a starter in the NFL, Shanahan expressed confidence in his ability to run the offense effectively. "Brandon's a really good thrower, runs our offense well, has done a really good job since he's been here," Shanahan said. "The guys believe in him and think he'll give us a good chance to win."
The 49ers will also be without defensive end Nick Bosa for the game, which only adds to the challenge facing the team in this crucial Week 12 matchup. Despite these setbacks, Shanahan remains optimistic that the 49ers can continue to compete at a high level, especially with the talent surrounding Allen.
For Purdy, missing this game is a tough setback in what has been an impressive season so far. Through 10 games, the third-year quarterback has thrown for 2,613 yards, with 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions, completing 66% of his passes. Purdy has been a key figure in the 49ers' offense, and his absence will certainly be felt in this important contest.
